mere exposure effect
-when shown something positive or neutral, the more you get exposed to that something, the more positive feelings you have towards it.
i.e. +ve / 0 >>>> ++++++ve
-when shown something negative, the more you get exposed to that something, the more negative feelings you have towards it.
i.e. -ve >>>>> -----ve

where >>>> = no. of exposures.

hence, when you are feeling depressed, the more you keep to yourself and think ab0ut how depressed you are, the more depressed you get.
that is how people fall into slumps.

so if you're happy and the more you think about it, the more you smile foolishly to yourself.
